Warhammer 40k wondering what army to go with and paint?
I use to play space marines a long time ago but i’m looking for something little more then the current version. (pretty easy to paint)
I’m looking for an army that takes a little more skill to paint and aslo to create/convert to my own little pieces of art. (like the plaguereaper or like what forge world does.)
I was thinking dark eldar, orks, necrons and chaos space marines.
I like all they’re paint shcemes and have some good ideas on some conversions but i’m definitely having a tough time choosing.
Please help
Really tough question!
Personally, if I was in your position, I’d be looking to choose between Orks, Chaos Space Marines, and Chaos Daemons. I think all these armies have amazing potential for awesome conversions. I’ll go through each in turn:
Orks – In the “fluff” (the history/background to the hobby), no two Ork vehicles are the same. They are all “kustom” built. So, as long as you’ve got the correct size and weapons on the model, you can go seriously crazy with your conversions! Add extra bits of armour! Orks and Gretchins climbing over them! You can go crazy with them – Ork vehicles are not designed to look great, they’re all about functionality, so you can have a lot of fun with them.
Chaos Space Marines / Daemons – Two different armies, but both Chaos! There’s a common theme between the two – both armies serve the Chaos Gods. The Chaos Marines are their mortal followers, former Space Marines turned bad. The Daemons are straight outta the warp – twisted creations drawn from the essence of the foul Gods themselves. Chaos gives you a huge potential for conversions. With the Chaos Marines, you can heavily convert the individual Marines and their vehicles – many of these troops have been fighting for over 10’000 years – they’ve picked up trophies of their kills, displayed on their armor and vehicles. With the Daemons, these creatures come from the warp itself – giving you huge potential to create truly monstrous creatures… the putrifying foul followers of Nurgle, the seductive yet disturbing forces of Slaanesh, Khorne’s bloodthirsty and savage minions (covered in the remains of their foes!), and the mutated, bizzare creations of Tzeentch! With Tzeentch in particular, you can really go crazy. He is the Lord of Change after all, so his followers – Daemons and Marines alike – are often crazily mutated.
I’m sure all painters/modellers will have their favourite army, and every army does have great potential for amazing conversions, but i believe Orks and Chaos give you the greatest freedom to be very creative, yet still remain “legal” in game terms (ie creating models that you’ll be able to field in a game of 40k).
How about checking some forums to see what other modellers/painters have done? I’m a Chaos player myself (Daemons and Marines), and you’ll be able to find lots of inspiration and ideas at this site: www.bolterandchainsword.com.
I hope this helps. Whatever army you decide to choose, I hope you have fun!
